The search for the perfect red: NYX

Blog, The Bella Edit

Ciao!

The first brand I searched for my perfect red lipstick was NYX, a brand that I’ve enjoyed in the past. I checked out shades from their soft matte lip cream line as well as the lip suede line. I’ve tried the soft matte lip cream before, but the lip suede is new to me. From the soft matte lip cream line, I’m looking at Amsterdam and Monte Carlo, and from the lip suede line I’m checking out Cherry Skies and Kitten  Heels.

I talked about the criteria I was going to be weighing the lipsticks by in this post, so I’ll go through by each category and talk about what I think of each lipstick.

Color:

Amsterdam has too much coral in it for me to consider it a true red, so I’m ruling that one out. Monte Carlo and Cherry skies are both too berry toned (though cherry skies looks like a great shade for fall). That leaves only Kitten Heels, which has orange undertones. That kind of red often looks too harsh on me.

Winner: Kitten Heels (by process of elimination)

Ranking: 4/5

Cost:

The soft matte lip cream retails for $5.99 (from Ulta) while the liquid suede retails for $6.99 (from Ulta). However, to fully calculate which one has a better price, I have to take into account how much product comes in each. The soft matte lip cream comes with .27 fl oz making it $22.19/ fl oz while the liquid suede has .13 fl oz making it $53/oz. However, I’m going to note that both are extremely inexpensive making both a win in cost overall.

Winner: NYX soft matte lip cream (either shade).

Ranking: 5/5

Packaging:

Some may say this is an unnecessary category, but I do like to take into account the packaging of the lipstick. Both come with a doe feet applicator but I like the soft matte lip cream better. There’s something about the matte black cap that I really love (and this one doesn’t collect dirt or fingerprints!). However, as far as packaging goes, the soft matte lip cream is extremely simple. The liquid suede packaging is slim and long, which I don’t like in a lipstick because it’s hard to put in my pocket.

Winner: NYX soft matte lip cream (either shade)

Ranking: 3/5

Scent:

Neither of these scents are super strong, but they’re there and both are different. The soft matte lip cream has scent of like vanilla cake that is super sugary. The liquid suede has a more chemically scent similar to Too Faced melted matte. Neither bother me that much, but I prefer the soft matte lip cream. Overall, it doesn’t meet the criteria for my perfect scent (rose) or my near perfect scent (lavender, fruity like the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche), but it’s not too bad.

Winner: NYX soft matte lip cream (either shade).

Ranking: 3/5

Ease of application:

Overall, this is a tricky category because one will always need a mirror to apply red lipstick because if you don’t- it’ll get everywhere! It’s important to note that these two lipsticks are specifically bad in this category because of the wand application. I will always find bullet lipsticks easier to apply than liquid. However, I like the soft matte lip cream applicator.

Winner: NYX soft matte lip cream (either shade).

Ranking: 1.5/5

Formula:

The soft matte lip cream used to be one of my favorite liquid lipsticks because I didn’t find it drying, but as time went on I’ve actually started to dislike the formula. It’s quite streaky and hard to get it to even out, especially when I’m swatching it on my hand. I had no such issues with the liquid suede, though I actually haven’t tried it on my lips, so I don’t know how well it sits on my lips. When I switched it on my hand, the formula was creamy and full coverage.

Winner: NYX liquid suede (either shade)

Ranking: 4/5

Pigment:

Once again, the soft matte lip cream is streaky. The liquid suede is fully pigmented and creamy and I prefer that pigment to the soft matte lip cream.

Winner: NYX liquid suede (either shade)

Ranking: 5/5

Wear time:

I haven’t tried the liquid suede, so automatically the soft matte lip cream wins this one.

Winner: NYX soft matte lip cream (either shade)

Ranking: N/a

Limited edition:

None of the colors I picked are limited edition, which is awesome because my perfect red I’ll want to be able to buy again and again.

Winner: N/a

Ranking: 5/5

Final Thoughts:

The soft matte lip cream won the most categories (5/9) the liquid suede won the three most important ones (color being first, then formula, then pigment). However, neither had what I would call my “perfect red.” Looks like I’ll have to keep searching!

I would defiantly recommend the soft matte lip cream for a more sheer lip (assuming you care less about evening out the color) and the liquid suede for more of a creamy finish.

Ciao bella!
